I recently wrote about the Council for National Policy, or CNP. Unfortunately, we need to talk about them again.
Mat Staver is a CNP member and founder of Liberty Counsel, a far-right religious legal organization labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Last week, Liberty Counsel set a trap to overturn the Supreme Court decision that legalized same-sex marriage.
Do you remember Kim Davis, the headline-making Kentucky clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses for gay couples?
Almost 10 years since Kim’s homophobia was on display for the whole world to see, Staver and his colleagues argue that she was entitled to a religious accommodation and shouldn’t have been forced to help same-sex couples.
This case is a trojan horse to expand the GOP’s legislative assault on LGBTQ+ Americans.
Staver wants to take this all the way to the Supreme Court, where another Council for National Policy group, the Federalist Society, influences our extremist justices.
In a press release, Staver said that he knows the Kim Davis case has the potential to overturn the Obergefell decision that legalized same-sex marriage.
You better believe him.
He probably knows how any case he takes to SCOTUS will be decided, since Staver himself is listed as a contributor on the Federalist Society’s website.
This is PERSONAL to me. My best friend from the Navy is gay, and so is my sister. Both are married to the love of their life, and now our corrupt Supreme Court could enter at any moment to nullify their marriages and revoke their spousal rights.
The only way to protect same-sex marriage is with a constitutional amendment, but Republicans will never pass it. That means Democrats CANNOT miss our chance to flip the House in November!
This is just the latest in the Council for National Policy’s assault on our rights and democracy.
CNP is an umbrella organization whose members are at the top of the Heritage Foundation, the Federalist Society, ALEC, Liberty Counsel, and dozens of other far-right think tanks, media conglomerates, religious groups, and industries.
They have wielded money and religion as a weapon over the GOP for over 40 years, using their influential network of members and allies to alter government through GOP lawmakers and every Republican administration.
They used the Federalist Society to hijack our courts, the Heritage Foundation to publish their Christian Nationalist agenda, groups like Alliance Defending Freedom to defend abortion bans, and ALEC to pay my opponent to vote against the people of Ohio’s 12th.
Now they’re using Liberty Counsel to end marriage equality.
Before you can win a fight – even a metaphorical one – you have to know who you’re fighting and what you’re fighting for.
I’m fighting the corruption that allows groups like CNP to exist and lets my opponent pocket millions to vote against Ohio families. I’m doing it for a better future.
Your next congressman,
Jerrad Christian
Democrat for OH-12
