Folks, I need you to remember that the attacks on women’s rights are not limited to abortion bans.
Lawmakers have introduced legislation to ban IVF and allow the federal government to track women’s pregnancies, to prosecute women who even consider having an abortion.
These policies are the work of the extremist think tanks and lobbying groups behind Project 2025, which calls for banning the phrase “reproductive health” from all government documents. Health.
I know they won’t stop at women and you do too. Just look at the paragraph where they attack reproductive rights. It’s on Page 4 of 887.
The next conservative President must make the institutions of American civil society hard targets for woke culture warriors. This starts with deleting the terms sexual orientation and gender identity (“SOGI”), diversity, equity, and inclusion (“DEI”), gender, gender equality, gender equity, gender awareness, gender-sensitive, abortion, reproductive health, reproductive rights, and any other term used to deprive Americans of their First Amendment rights out of every federal rule, agency regulation, contract, grant, regulation, and piece of legislation that exists.
They’re coming for women. Trans people. Gay people. Black people. And they’re coming for immigrants, so much so that they plan to build new detention centers and militarize police departments to round them up like Hitler rounded up Jews in Poland.
When you look deeper into Project 2025 and the groups behind it – groups like the Council for National Policy – you know it’s not just our 21st century rights on the line.
It’s our jobs, our entertainment, our literature, our history, and every aspect of society that we consider normal.
Under Project 2025, the federal government would recognize single-parent households and families with same-sex parents as a threat to children’s stability.
They want to overturn employment protections and anti-discrimination policies for all minorities, then classify LGBTQ+ material as “adult content” and ban all adult content (from books and television shows to actual pornography).
Maybe you aren’t in one of those targeted groups, but someone you love probably is. Think about them if you can’t feel the seriousness of this hostile takeover when thinking about your own life.
I want to be clear that this threat is coming from the top of the Republican Party, the head of the snake, NOT every Republican politician and certainly not most Republican voters.
It’s coming from the extremists that bought the GOP over the last few decades and poisoned our politics. They took over the party the way Hitler took over Germany.
Everyone knows about the Holocaust, but do you know what Hitler did before he went after Jewish people in Eastern Europe? He got leverage in the government and sweet-talked his way into more power than he could be trusted with.
Then he targeted his political opponents, just like Trump has promised to do.
Politicians, activists, and even unelected government officials associated with any party to the left of the Nazi Party risked violent attacks, imprisonment, and death if they didn’t leave Germany.
We are already a country where women have to leave their states for lifesaving health care. We cannot become a country where our own citizens are forced to flee the country or live in fear of having secular beliefs or belonging to a minority group.
Like Hitler, Trump calls his opponents “vermin.” Like Hitler, Trump slept with a copy of Mein Kampf next to his bed. Anyone who doesn’t see their similarities yet will soon if he’s re-elected.
After World War II, German pastor Martin Niemöller spoke out about what he considered was his own complicity at the start of Hitler’s regime. You might have read one of his quotes before…
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
This time, “first they came for” women. They won’t stop there, and I refuse to be complicit or pretend like we can’t see what’s already happening.
I hate that things are so dire. I hate that this is the message we have to send. But I’m compelled to because we know what will happen if we don’t win in November. It’s already started.
If we lose, don’t expect a woman to ever have the chance to run for president again.
Don’t expect America to ever be “great again.”
For our democracy,
